Background and Motivation
Given the positive effects on the health, environment, and economy that biking has, this option has been becoming more popular over the last decade. However, the fact that more people are biking is leading to a potential problem when it comes to bike parking and bike security. During 2018 and 2019, the Waterloo Regional Police received over 1338 bike theft reports in the region. Bike theft attempts consist primarily of pilfering unsecured and easy access bike parts. Poor locking mechanisms that do not properly secure high-valued bike parts make it more prompt for bikes and bike parts to be stolen. Unsecured bike parts are a target for theft due to the available aftermarket for reselling. As such, individuals need a more secure locking mechanisms for bikes that reduces the risk of bikes and parts being stolen.​

Lock-ed is a smart and safe bike station that secures bike components using front and rear locking mechanisms. Lock-ed lets you lock your bicycle using your smartphone via the Lock-ed user application. Through cloud connectivity, all bike events are monitored to detect suspicious theft activity and activate the alarm system.
